Research from universities (Stanford Presenteeism, SWELL) and companies (Microsoft Screen Apnea) has shown that people change how they behave during digital work, consciously or not. We also know a good deal about focus at the computer. Yet no framework has placed computer work, health and focus in one picture, or put a number on how they relate.
Mike Snyder (Chair of Genetics at Stanford) has joined Archetype as our scientific advisor. His lab established that continuous signals from personal devices can reveal a person's state before they can feel it. We are working with him to extend that into the workplace: research into occupational intelligence that quantifies health and focus.
Our first result is the Digital Work Capacity Index (DCWI), a framework developed with the Snyder Lab and submitted to JMIR. It draws on affective computing, occupational health and attention research to quantify the relationship between computer work, health and focus.
We will continue to build on this research to work towards understanding the human state during digital work and utilizing it for the advantage of our health and focus.
